Hello Troop # 374!! I'm Alex T. and I started this Eagle Project in November of 2003.
Each year, Troop 374 assists VFW post 2164 by retiring old flags that they have collected. These flags are then properly retired at a Troop campout. To help continue this project, please have the Troop Quartermaster (with an adult) do the following each year:
Beginning of October: Contact the VFW to arrange a time to pick up their flags. Post 2164 is located on the intersection of Geneva Rd. and Papworth Ave.
Before Campout: The flags are to be retired around Veteran's Day, therefore plan to retire these flags at the troop campout in November. In preparation, rehearse the ceremony at a troop meeting prior to the campout and bring the following:
The flags to be retired
Three properly pre-folded flags
Appropriate number of flag retirement ceremony scripts every ceremonial participant. (Typically 4)
Appropriate number of scripts of "Taps" for everybody in attendance, not just ceremonial participants (see Taps).
A trumpet to play "Taps"
At the Campout:
Follow the procedure on the attached script and retire the flags. Depending on the number of flags to be retired, it can take 2-4 hours to dispose of all the flags, so plan accordingly.
